It gives me a great deal of pleasure to approve the
NSDAR Conservation Medal

for

Mr. David Milarch
Co-founder
The Champion Tree Project

I n t e r n a t i o n a l

Mr. Milarch's endeavors in tree conservation with The Champion Tree Project International organization is more than commendable. The idea of cloning "champion" trees is pure conservation inspiration for the future and shows what one person can achieve if motivated.

Mount Vernon clones history
USA TODAY, June 20, 2001

  • His innovative mission to preserve, propagate and plant a living legacy of Champion Trees is indeed impressive.

  • His project of cloning the 13 oldest survivor trees that George Washington planted at Mt. Vernon, and his plan to grow 50 duplicates of each tree for Mt. Vernon as a family gift, is truly unselfish conservation at its best,

  • as is his family's gift of 86 trees planted at five sites for the 2002 Winter Olympics.

  • The plan to plant trees at the Pentagon to honor the 9-11 victims is a real patriotic gift of spirit.

George Cates (Maj.-Gen. ret., U.S. Marines), former executive director of the National Tree Trust, will plant a memorial of ChampTrees™ in April 2002 to honor all those who died in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack on the Pentagon.

To preserve our natural resources, we must nurture and encourage individuals like Mr. Milarch who are so caring and knowledgeable about conservation management for the future.
