The Shavingbrush Tree is named for its exquisitely crafted flowers, which look like a bristly shaving brush. The tropical tree is a native of Central America, which was introduced to south Florida for its beautiful flowers.

This Shavingbrush Tree's sprawling, writhing crown shades a yard in Boynton Beach in south Florida. The tree is named for the unusual shape of its very beautiful and colorful flowers (photo at left). This tree was the second species to be cloned by Terry Mock, Vice President of the Florida Champion Tree Project, who selected it for its extra-ordinary ornamental value.

The flowers emerge from their pods in season exactly at sundown, often with an audible "pop." The long flower buds consist of five brown petals which curl up as the bud opens and flower emerges.
