The American Smoketree looks modest by Champion standards, yet is a giant among its species.

This modest size tree is located on the Purdue University campus, in West Lafayette, Indiana. In spring 2000, the University announced plans to build a Visual and Performing Arts Center on the Smoketree's block. Rather than allow our National Champion to be cut down, a campaign began to move the tree.
