Truth or Consequences

In early February, I was invited to India to speak at the World Elders Council of Ancient Traditions and Cultures about why Onondaga Lake is one of the most sacred sites in North America. In Syracuse, which is the city south of the lake, virtually everyone believes Onondaga Lake is the most polluted lake in America. Yet, the whole truth is Onondaga Lake is the birthplace of democracy in the New World—where The Peacemaker and Hiawatha planted The Tree of Peace, where warriors were taught to “bury the hatchet," where The Great Law of Peace was taught, where The Seventh Generation instruction was given.

While I was in India, Al Gore also visited the largest democracy on Earth. And Deepak Chopra also visited India, and was guest editor of The India Times, India’s daily English language newspaper. Deepak interviewed Al and printed the transcript. Most of the interview was about global warming, and Al Gore insisted global warming is real, backed by sound science and solid data, and is the number one challenge facing humanity. Al Gore also insisted we have only ten years to reduce greenhouse gases in the atmosphere or we will be past the point of no return.

Near the end of his interview, Deepak Chopra asked Al Gore about the global warming policies of the Bush administration. Gore's reply was short and blunt: U.S. government policy on climate change will change 15 minutes after George W. Bush leaves office.

Three weeks ago, NASA scientist James Hansen—one of the world’s leading experts on climate—was on CBS 60 Minutes talking about global warming. James Hansen agreed with Al Gore. We have only 10 years to put a lid on exponential increases in greenhouse gases by reducing fossil fuel emissions, and remove these industrial pollutants from the atmosphere.

I agree with these three men—a scientist, a politician and a spiritual teacher. Climate change is the top issue facing humanity, and we have at best 10 years to wake the folk up and change how we are living on this planet. In fact, I believe we already ran out of time, and we are currently living on borrowed time—we have been given a second chance by a string of volcanic eruptions, and the karmic sacrifices of a huge host of ancient souls and divine beings.

James Hansen also talked about how the Bush administration is censoring him, trying to silence his efforts to tell American people the truth about global warming and climate change. Politicians are suppressing both scientific data and the truth about the greatest single threat to the future of our society, our species, our entire planet.

60 Minutes described how George Bush appointed oil industry lobbyist Phil Clooney head of the White House Council on Environmental Quality. In that position, Clooney reviewed scientific reports, and edited them to remove language that made global warming a certain reality of our times, and inserted language to make global warming seem doubtful and uncertain, and make climate change seem minor, manageable, even a benefit.

The War on Terra

Clearly, we were misled about the real agenda of the current administration. What we face isn’t a global War on Terror. No, the Bush administration is waging is a War on Terra—a battle against the Earth itself and its precious life support systems. The oil-rich Middle East is just one frontline in their global assault on our environment, on our future, on all of nature.

When you look at scientific reality on one hand, and actions of the Bush-Cheney administration on the other, you have to conclude George Bush and his neocon cronies are the real aliens—the extra-terrestrials whose mission is to destroy the Earth. These people are leading a global campaign that is killing our planet for profit. Their actions are not only unacceptable, unintelligent, unethical, unconstitutional, and immoral—they are a form of treason. And it is time we, the people, put a stop to their madness.

A few years ago, I was talking to my friend Chief Powless, an elder chief at Onondaga Nation, a sovereign indigenous nation south of Syracuse. He said, “You know David, we can talk to Australian aborigines and understand each other. We can communicate with indigenous peoples in Asia and Africa and make sense. But you Anglo-Europeans, we can’t figure you out. The way you live doesn’t make sense to us. We think maybe you’re not from here. Maybe you are from another planet. You know, extra-terrestrials. That’s why you act so crazy as to destroy nature and ruin the Mother Earth."

So, I have to ask each and every one of you: “Are you truly a citizen of the Earth? Are you ready to claim this planet as your home? Our mother ship? Are you prepared to take action to save our planet? And yourselves? And your children and their children?"

The Next Generations

Because the reality is that our environmental problems won’t be solved from the top down. Not in Washington. Not in Albany. Not in corporate boardrooms. Real change must come from the bottom up. It is we, the people, who have to start making new and different choices about how we live every day.

Further, real change isn’t likely to come from the older generation. They made their choices, adopted their lifestyles and are set in their ways. No, it is youth—the next generations—who have the freedom, the imagination and the energy to make new choices, to chart a new path, to bring about the deep, fundamental and profound changes that are urgently needed if there is to be a human future on Earth.

A State of Emergency

Three Essential Actions

  • restore soil by renewing minerals & trace elements
  • plant trees and regenerate forests
  • stop burning fossil fuels and start fixing carbon
