Most of New York's old-growth forests are state-owned in the Adirondack Mountain Preserve, followed by the Catskill Mountains. Many believe New York has more undocumented old-growth than any Eastern state, but much is in small patches on private lands. New York's forests also embrace a uniquely broad range of species diversity and forest community ecotypes.
